How to Create LinkedIn Posts That Actually Connect

How to Create LinkedIn Posts That Actually Connect (Not Just Go Viral)

Let’s get one thing straight: going viral isn’t a strategy. It’s a byproduct.

It’s what might happen when your post hits just the right nerve, at just the right time, with just the right people.

But chasing virality? That’s a fast track to burnout, performative content, and metrics that don’t mean much in the long run.

So let’s flip the script.

Let’s talk about what actually works on LinkedIn: the kind of posts that build real trust, grow your network in meaningful ways, and help you get opportunities that reflect who you are and what you bring to the table.

The Truth About LinkedIn Virality

LinkedIn can absolutely expand your reach and open doors when your content resonates.

But here’s what most people don’t see:

  • Not all “viral” posts are authentic

  • Some are artificially boosted by comment pods, automation tools, or ghostwritten content designed only for performance

  • Many of those posts leave people feeling disconnected or like they need to become someone they’re not to stand out

Real engagement is different. It’s rooted in value, emotion, and connection, not gimmicks or shortcuts.

What Actually Works

Here’s what I’ve seen time and again, both in my own content and in the clients I coach:

🔹 Tell a story
Not a highlight reel. Not a list of wins. A real, human moment with tension, humor, or insight.

🔹 Spark emotion
Whether it’s frustration, inspiration, nostalgia, or vulnerability, emotion draws people in.

🔹 Make it skimmable
Use short paragraphs, avoid jargon, and write like a human. Most people are reading your post in line at the grocery store or in between meetings. Make it easy to read.

🔹 Offer a takeaway
Even when sharing personal stories, always consider what someone else can take from it.

🔹 Invite dialogue
The best posts don’t lecture. They open the door for others to share their own experience or perspective.

Use AI as Support, Not as a Substitute

AI can help you break through writer’s block and stay consistent. Use it to shape your ideas, not to replace your voice.

Try this plug-and-play prompt structure in ChatGPT or your favorite AI tool:

Prompt:
Create a LinkedIn post on [TOPIC] using this format:

  1. Open with a bold or surprising line

  2. Add “Think about it:” and share a relatable situation

  3. List two or three punchy, clear bullet points

  4. Ask a rhetorical question or present a challenge

  5. Transition into your main insight with something like:

    • “What I’ve learned is…”

    • “This changed everything for me…”

    • “Let’s break it down.”

    • “So what does that actually mean?”

    • “Now here’s where it gets real.”

  6. Share your insight in one or two lines

  7. Add “Remember:” or “The world needs:” followed by two or three helpful takeaways

  8. End with a question that invites people to share

Style Tips:

  • Use your real voice

  • Keep it around 15 to 20 lines

  • Avoid hashtags and emojis

  • Keep it simple, bold, and meaningful

What to Post if You’re Stuck

If you’re unsure what to write about, start here:

  • A challenge you overcame and what you learned

  • A common myth or misconception in your industry

  • A career detour that taught you something valuable

  • A simple piece of advice you wish you’d known sooner

  • A behind-the-scenes look at how you do something

  • A question you’re exploring that others might relate to

People love feeling seen. They appreciate honesty. And they remember stories that sound like real life, not polished perfection.

Mistakes That Can Tank Engagement

❌ Writing only when inspiration strikes
❌ Trying to mimic influencers who don’t speak like you
❌ Posting without a clear point or takeaway
❌ Making everything about yourself
❌ Fixating on likes and shares instead of building trust

Focus on your voice, your values, and your audience. Let everything else be secondary.

If a Post Takes Off

If one of your posts gets more traction than usual, it might feel exciting, and a little overwhelming.

You may get comments that challenge you. Some may completely miss the point. That’s part of it.

Resist the urge to over-clarify or debate in the comments. Stand by your message. Let the post live on its own.

You do not need a viral post to make LinkedIn work for you.

You need consistency. You need honesty. And you need to write like a person who actually wants to connect, not just convert.

Use tools like AI to get started, but never let them flatten your voice.

Create for clarity, not clout. For connection, not clicks.

Because the best content is the kind that sounds like you and stays with someone long after they’ve scrolled past it.
